The essays collected here celebrate mark the distinguished career of Professor W. Mark Ormrod, reflecting the vibrancy and range of his scholarship on the structures, personalities and culture of ruling late medieval England. Encompassing political, administrative, Church and social history, the volume focusses on three main themes: monarchy, state and political culture. For the first, it explores Edward III's reactions to the deaths of his kinfolk and cases of political defamation across the fourteenth century. The workings of the "state" are examined through studies of tax and ecclesiastical records, the Court of Chivalry, fifteenth-century legislation, and the working practices of the privy seal clerk, Thomas Hoccleve. Finally, separate discussions of collegiate statutes and the household ordinances of Cecily, duchess of York consider the political culture of regulation and code-making.

Comprendre le fonctionnement du Sénat aux deux derniers siècles de la République en s’intéressant à la façon dont les décisions y étaient élaborées, tel est l’objectif de cette thèse, qui rompt avec la perspective juridique et institutionnelle longtemps dominante, en privilégiant le point de vue des pratiques politiques. La dynamique des délibérations et ses enjeux sont au centre de l’étude : rôle des magistrats qui consultent les sénateurs, exercice de l’initiative politique, poids des groupes hiérarchiques à l’intérieur de l’assemblée, distribution de l’autorité, telles sont les questions traitées dans la partie principale de l’ouvrage, qui envisage aussi l’arrière-plan idéologique de ces pratiques, après une analyse de l’espace et du temps politiques propres au Sénat : lieux de réunion et calendrier des séances. La réédition du volume est l’occasion pour l’auteur de présenter, dans une préface, l’évolution des recherches des trente dernières années sur le Sénat républicain et de dresser un bilan des études qui ont prolongé, confirmé, ou contesté ses propres résultats.

Marianne Coudry est agrégée d’histoire, ancien membre de l’École française de Rome, et professeur émérite des universités après avoir enseigné dans celles de Nancy et de Mulhouse. Elle a co-dirigé plusieurs ouvrages collectifs, dont L’invention des grands hommes de la Rome antique (2001), Praeda. Butin de guerre et société dans la Rome républicaine (2009), Le luxe et les lois somptuaires de la Rome antique (2016), et co-édité deux des volumes de l’Histoire romaine de Dion Cassius dans la Collection des Universités de France (2011 et 2014) et une nouvelle traduction annotée de la Guerre des Gaules et de la Guerre civile de César aux Belles Lettres (2020).

Among the imperial states of the ancient world, the Roman empire stands out for its geographical extent, its longevity and its might. This collective volume investigates how the many peoples inhabiting Rome’s vast empire perceived, experienced, and reacted to both the concrete and the ideological aspects of Roman power. More precisely, it explores how they dealt with Roman might through their religious and political rituals; what they regarded as the empire’s distinctive features, as well as its particular limitations and weaknesses; what forms of criticism they developed towards the way Romans exercised power; and what kind of impact the encounter with Roman power had upon the ways they defined themselves and reflected about power in general. 

This volume is unusual in bringing Jewish, and especially rabbinic, sources and perspectives together with Roman, Greek or Christian ones. This is the result of its being part of the research program “Judaism and Rome” (ERC Grant Agreement no. 614 424), dedicated to the study of the impact of the Roman empire upon ancient Judaism.

Katell Berthelot is a CNRS Professor working on the history of Jews and Judaism in the Greco-Roman world, and a member of the TDMAM research center at Aix-Marseille University (UMR 7297). In 2014-2019 she was the Principal Investigator of the ERC “Judaism and Rome”.

In The Excommunication of Elizabeth I, Aislinn Muller examines the excommunication and deposition of Queen Elizabeth I of England by the Roman Catholic Church, and its political afterlife during her reign. Muller shows that Elizabeth’s excommunication was a crucial turning point for both Catholics and Protestants, one that irrevocably changed attitudes towards the queen, widened political participation and resistance, and posed a destabilising threat to her regime. The Excommunication of Elizabeth I demonstrates how this event exacerbated religious tensions in England’s foreign and domestic politics, and how Elizabeth’s conflict with the papacy shaped the development of anti-Catholicism in post-Reformation England.
