Institution multiséculaire, la Gendarmerie nationale a fait la démonstration de sa capacité à s’engager sur des fronts variés. Cette large palette de responsabilités s’est sans cesse enrichie, conduisant la gendarmerie à évoluer, avec de nouvelles compétences, des pratiques rénovées et des réformes institutionnelles. Pour autant, les années récentes ont fait surgir de nouveaux enjeux, aussi bien en interne qu’au regard de la société, en pleine mutation.

Fruit d’un colloque scientifique interdisciplinaire qui s’est tenu sous l’égide de l’École des officiers de la Gendarmerie nationale (EOGN) et de l’université Paris-Est Créteil (Upec), cet ouvrage propose de porter un éclairage académique sur ces défis managériaux et sociétaux. Les pratiques de la gendarmerie sont questionnées à travers les travaux de chercheurs en sciences de gestion et en science politique. En conclusion, un prolongement vers un sujet essentiel : servir et protéger l’environnement.

Ouvert par une préface du général de division Laurent Bitouzet, ce livre est destiné aux étudiants de niveau master et doctorat (en sciences de gestion, science politique, sociologie, management public), aux chercheurs ou aux officiers de gendarmerie désireux de mieux comprendre leur institution et, de façon générale, à celles et ceux qu’intéressent les problématiques de sécurité, de commandement et de management d’une organisation publique.

The Middle Dutch term schaec referred to abduction with marital intent. This book explores this phenomenon to understand wider attitudes towards marriage-making in the fifteenth-century Low Countries. Whilst exchanging words of consent was all that was required legally, making marriage was a social process that evoked public concern and familial scrutiny. Abductions embodied contrasting evaluations of what mattered when selecting a spouse and resulted in polarized trials in which narratives on consent, coercion, and family strategy coincided and competed. Abduction, Marriage, and Consent draws from a wide range of legal records to assess how men, women, families, and authorities used, navigated, and dealt with abductions during this period. It contributes to debates on consent, family involvement, and women’s access to justice and demonstrates that abduction should be approached as a comprehensive social phenomenon, one that is crucial in the history of marriage and women’s social and legal status.

The ‘humble petition’ was ubiquitous in early modern society and featured prominently in crucial moments such as the outbreak of the civil wars and in everyday local negotiations about taxation, welfare and litigation. People at all levels of society – from noblemen to paupers – used petitions to make their voices heard and these are valuable sources for mapping the structures of authority and agency that framed early modern society.

The Power of Petitioning in Early Modern Britain offers a holistic study of this crucial topic in early modern British history. The contributors survey a vast range of sources, showing the myriad ways people petitioned the authorities from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. They cross the jurisdictional, sub-disciplinary and chronological boundaries that have otherwise constrained the current scholarly literature on petitioning and popular political engagement. Teasing out broad conclusions from innumerable smaller interventions in public life, they not only address the aims, attitudes and strategies of those involved, but also assesses the significance of the processes they used. This volume makes it possible to rethink the power of petitioning and to re-evaluate broad trends regarding political culture, institutional change and state formation.

What is the relationship between seapower, law, and strategy? Anna Brinkman uses in-depth analysis of cases brought before the Court of Prize Appeal during the Seven Years' War to explore how Britain worked to shape maritime international law to its strategic advantage. Within the court, government officials and naval and legal minds came together to shape legal decisions from the perspectives of both legal philosophy and maritime strategic aims. As a result, neutrality and the negotiation of rights became critical to maritime warfare. Balancing Strategy unpicks a complex web of competing priorities: deals struck with the Dutch Republic and Spain; imperial rivalry; mercantilism; colonial trade; and the relationships between metropoles and colonies, trade, and the navy. Ultimately, influencing and shaping international law of the sea allows a nation to create the norms and rules that constrain or enable the use of seapower during war.

Anna Brinkman is a Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department at King's College London and co-director of the Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies. She is a historian of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century maritime strategy and international law.
