Beste lezer, Geachte collega,

De redactie van de Rechtshistorische Courant werkt ook gedurende de zomer door, maar we kunnen niet ontkennen dat wij zo nu en dan een terrasje opzoeken en dromen van exotische oorden. Alsof het gepland was, liep op de redactie een bericht binnen van Viola Heutger, waarin zij vol trots een boek aankondigde van Bastiaan van der Velden over het juridisch onderwijs op Curaçao. Bastiaan zoekt blijkbaar de extremen op, want zijn proefschrift handelde over het gebruik van het Fries als rechts- en bestuurstaal. In de aankondiging viel ons oog meteen op volgende zin: Het boek zal uitgebreid aandacht besteden aan drie rechtshistorische collega's: prof. De Smidt, prof. Kunst en prof. Spruit, die vorm hebben gegeven aan deze tropische opleiding. Onze verbeelding sloeg bij zo een zin meteen op hol en onmiddellijk zagen we voor onze ogen deze eminenties van de rechtsgeschiedenis (en ook hun al even eminente opvolger Jan Lokin), Romeins recht doceren op het strand met een cocktail in de hand. We vrezen dat Viola en Bastiaan onze illusies vlug zullen doorprikken, maar het is zomer, dus mogen we nog even wegdromen.

• Van Der Velden, Bastiaan, Van Praktizijnsopleiding tot Juridische Faculteit: 140 jaar juridisch onderwijs op Curaçao, Den Haag, Boom Juridische Uitgevers, 76p.

Midden in de Caribische zee liggen zes eilanden die onderdeel uitmaken van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Twee eilanden, Aruba en Curaçao, hebben een eigen universiteit waar juridisch onderwijs wordt gegeven, en de faculteit op het tweede eiland komt in deze studie in het zonnetje te staan.
Curaçao staat op een belangrijk breekpunt in haar geschiedenis, binnen het Koninkrijk zal het zich als zelfstandig land verder moeten ontwikkelen nu er een belangrijke staatkundige verandering op komst is waarna het land autonoom zal worden. De NA in de naam van de Universiteit van de Nederlandse Antillen zullen binnenkort tot het verleden gaan behoren, maar dit jaar bestaat de UNA ook dertig jaar, een mooi moment om terug te kijken.
In deze studie beschrijft Bastiaan van der Velden de Juridische Faculteit van de UNA, maar laat ook zien dat er een lange geschiedenis aan dit academisch onderwijs vooraf gaat. Dertig jaar geleden is de UNA opgericht, veertig jaar geleden werd de eerste steen voor de Rechtshogeschool gelegd, een onmisbare schakel tussen het beroepsgerichte praktizijnsonderwijs dat voordien op Curaçao bestond en het academische onderwijs. De Rechtshogeschool heeft wederom voorgangers. Sinds 1869 wordt op Curaçao het praktizijnsexamen afgenomen en jongeren werden door leden van het Hof en andere personen uit de juridische beroepsgroep hierop voorbereid. Het boek zal uitgebreid aandacht besteden aan drie rechtshistorische collega’s: prof. De Smidt, prof. Kunst en prof. Spruit, die vorm hebben gegeven aan deze tropische opleiding.

• Kok, G., Rotterdamse juristen uit vijf eeuwen, Hilversum, Uitgeverij Verloren, 420p.

Op de Coolsingel in Rotterdam staan standbeelden van drie befaamde juristen: Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, Hugo de Groot en Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp. Dit inspireerde oud-hofpresident en amateurhistoricus G.Chr. Kok om een boek te schrijven over een veertigtal juristen dat de afgelopen eeuwen werkzaam is geweest in Rotterdam. Kok heeft ernaar gestreefd om naast de eerder genoemde stadspensionarissen zowel juristen uit verschillende juridische beroepen als uit het bedrijfsleven te portretteren. In zijn boek heeft hij biografieën opgenomen van onder andere de bankiers Marten, Mees en Van der Mandele, NRC-hoofdredacteur Van der Hoeven, burgemeester Oud, de notarissen Nauta sr. en Treurniet, kinderrechter Hudig, advocaat/minister Donker, zeerechtkenner Schadee, rechtbankpresident Reuder, de advocaten Nolst Trenité sr., Drost en Dutilh, hoogleraar/dekaan Sanders en bedrijfsjurist Drion. Dit fraai geïllustreerde boek geeft een boeiende inkijk in het verleden van juridisch Rotterdam.

• In de Courant van juni verhaalde de redactie nog de financiële beslommeringen van de Société Internationale "Fernand de Visscher" pour l'Histoire des Droits de l'Antiquité (SIHDA). De problemen zijn echter van de baan, en de 63e zitting zal doorgaan van 22 tot 26 september 2009 te Kavala / Philippi (Griekenland). Thema is nog steeds het procedurerecht in de Oudheid, maar het is mogelijk daarvan af te wijken. Registreren kan via website, email of per fax (+32 4 3662952). Slechts 100 personen kunnen de zitting bijwonen, dus u kan dit best zo snel mogelijk doen!

Uit Frankrijk wordt de redactie een nieuw digitaal rechtshistorisch portaal gemeld. Op www.histoiredudroit.fr wil men allerhande praktische informatie, nuttige links en elektronische bronnen ter beschikking stellen van onderzoekers en lesgevers, om zo hun werk te vergemakkelijken en de publiciteit te verzekeren van evenementen die de rechtsgeschiedenis ondersteunen. Als u wil bijdragen tot de uitbouw van dit cyberinitiatief, kan u altijd contact opnemen met de oprichters ervan via postmaster@histoiredudroit.fr!

Présentation éditeur A close engagement with law has long been a core dimension of feminist activism. However, it is only since the late twentieth century that a distinct and vital body of academic literature addressing the nature, effects, and limits of that engagement has emerged. In particular, from the 1980s onwards, a critical mass of scholarship has accumulated, establishing feminist legal studies not just as a recognizable subdiscipline, both of law and of feminist or women’s studies, but also as a terrain of substance and complexity, the exploration and understanding of which requires increasingly sophisticated navigation skills. As research in and around the area flourishes as never before, this new title in the Routledge Major Works series, Critical Concepts in Law, meets the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of a rapidly growing and ever more complex corpus of literature, and to provide a map of feminist legal studies as it has emerged, developed, and diverged over the last thirty years. There are many ways of classifying feminist thinking within and beyond law. A typical method is to divide work into competing political or theoretical camps (such as liberal feminism, socialist feminism, and radical feminism). Another way, more common in law, is to organize feminist perspectives around issues such as abortion, equal pay, and pornography. A third treatment would be to focus on epistemologies (for example, feminist empiricism, standpoint theory, and postmodernism). However, the editor of this reference work, an internationally renowned scholar, eschews these increasingly sterile approaches and instead offers a view of feminist legal studies as a dynamic process of engagement with law which takes different forms and emphases at different points and contexts. Feminist legal studies does not, she argues, comprise a static set of ideas; it is rather an ongoing conversation. For this reason, the material gathered here in this four-volume collection is, to a considerable extent, organized chronologically, starting with the key feminist issues and interventions of the early 1980s. The collection then progresses thematically to reflect the shifts and turns of feminist legal thought. The content of the material is explicitly inter-jurisdictional, and reflects the global nature of feminist legal scholarship and, in particular, current thematic preoccupations. With a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the material in its historical and intellectual context, Feminist Legal Studies is an essential work of reference and is destined to be valued by scholars and students of feminist law—as well as those working in allied areas—as a vital one-stop research resource.
